Australia - FSANZ Plain English Allergen Labelling
In 2015 Food Standards Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) commissioned a survey and a targeted consultation to investigate if the terminology used for allergens is recognised by consumers.
The resulting report indicated some issues were found with consumers understanding and manufacturer’s interpretation of Standard 1.2.3. The issues included ‘Contains’ statements being inconsistently used on labels and not always matching the ingredient listing and the allergen source not always clearly identified.
The report indicates Standard 1.2.3 needs to be amended in parts to be more specific.
FSANZ recognises more consultation is required. For more information about the report, please contact our Labeling Services.
