Harmonization of national legislation

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India published the new Regulation on food additives, thus amending para. 3.1 of the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) regulations, 2011. The aim is to harmonize Indian legislation and make consultation easier. The INS number for additives (the International Numbering System) has been introduced.
The Food category system is the most effective method to identify the eligibility of an additive; moreover, single food categories have been adequately and clearly defined. The rule specifies that if an additive is allowed in a certain general category, it will also be allowed in all its subcategories, unless otherwise indicated. What is a food additive has now been defined as were the acceptable daily intake (ADI), the maximum level of use, the Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), the carry-over (the latter becomes unacceptable in infant formulas and foods for special medical purposes for infants or follow-on formulas).

The Regulation entered into force on the date of publication in the Journal (Sept. 8, 2016) and states that the deadline within which compliance has to become the standard is July 1, 2017.
