Canada approved a comprehensive food safety legislation known as the Safe Food for Canadians Act (SFCA) in 2012, but the key regulations to implement the legislation were not proposed until this year.  On January 21, the federal government published the proposed Safe Food for Canadians Regulations to mandate new requirements for all foods imported into Canada, sold across provinces, or prepared for export.

Going forward, the safety of all CFIA-regulated food will fall under the existing Food and Drugs Act (FDA) and the final SFCA regulations. The proposed regulations seek to consolidate the existing commodity-based regulations and certain provisions of the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Regulations (CPLR) related to food.
