Japan - Updates on the current situation of milk and milk products
The Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries updated the statistics on milk and milk products.
The production of fresh milk in Japan has been decreasing since 1997. In 2017, the production of fresh milk amounted to 7.290.000 tons with a decrease of 0.7% compared to the previous year while in 2018 it increased by 0.3%. with reference to the consumption, in 2017 it increased by 1.3% for milk; it decreased by 0.6% for processed and homogenized milk, it increased by 6.5% for cheese and fresh cream.
Imported milk products amounted to 5.000.000 tons of which 3.480.000 tons were cheese, 650.000 tons were ice-cream, 380.000 tons were butter. The main countries exporting to Japan are Australia (1.240.000 tons), New Zealand (1.090.000 tons), USA (480.000 tons), EU (1.220.000 tons).
