Australia - Expected Changes to Free Range Egg Labelling
Australia has taken the next step to increase consumer confidence when purchasing free range eggs by developing a draft national information standard for free range egg labeling. The regulatory changes are expected to be in place by March 2017, with a twelve month transition period to allow producers time to update their practices. The draft information standard covers the definition of ‘Free Range’, specifies labeling requirements including stocking density (number of hens per hectare of land) and specifies display requirements when eggs are sold without packaging.
