Korea – Demand for handmade beer increases
With the recent revision of the Liquor Tax Law, the handmade beer market is gaining popularity in Korea and its market is expected to expand further into convenience stores and large-scale malls.
Therefore, the Ministry Of Food And Drug Safety (MFDS) plans to strengthen safety management so that handmade beer is produced and distributed in a safe and hygienic manner.
First, the MFDS decided to support customized technology that matches the characteristics of the company. The MFDS educated the liquor hygiene management system evaluation criteria and preparation instructions and emphasized the importance of beer hygiene management and keg cleaning method, draft beer supply management plan, and quality management tips. The MFDS shared some HACCP certification cases and educated the selection and use of cleaning agents reminding the regulations on hazardous chemicals.
The production of handmade beer in Korea increased from 454,000 Kl in 2015 to 977,000 Kl in last year: more than doubled in two years. The number of manufacturers is rapidly increasing from 83 to 718.
