Mexico - Strategy to protect pollinating insects

Many agricultural products are at risk

Sader (Secretarías de Agricultura y Desarrollo Rural) and Semarnat (Secretarías de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales) are part of a coordination group that intends to find short-term solutions to propose a national strategy to protect pollinating insects.

A diagnosis is sought for the decline of the various pollinators, whose gradual loss affects the production of animal and vegetable foods, whereas in Mexico more than 80% of flowering plants reproduce through pollination. Much of the national food production is therefore at risk: beans, peppers, tomatoes, pumpkins, plums, but also mango, apple, guava and coffee.
The group of experts seeks concrete answers to the problem and will also take into account the impact caused by deforestation, traditional agricultural systems, the introduction of exotic species and the use of chemicals.
A final document presenting a viable strategy is expected for the month of March 2020.
