Following the EU Regulation no. 1308/2013 of the European Parliament, then amended by Regulation (EU) 2016/791, Portugal has formalized the national supplementary rules on aid for the distribution of fruit, vegetables and dairy products in schools, so as to prepare a national strategy between 1 August 2017 and 31 July 2023. 
In particular, the measures aim to provide students who attend the 1st cycle of basic education with fruits, vegetables and dairy products, while for the students of pre-school education the rules focus on the distribution of milk and dairy products.

In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the application of this measure and to promote its knowledge by the public, the school system also provided grants for monitoring, evaluating and communicating these activities.
