Poland - Activities of the Supreme Audit Office (NIK)
The Supreme Audit Office (NIK) is the top independent state audit body in Poland. Its mission is to foster sound management and effectiveness in public service to the benefit of the Republic of Poland.
In the report concerning dietary supplements NIK indicates that the Polish market is particularly exposed to unfair market practices violating collective consumer interests. Dietary supplements market in Poland is developing very dynamically. In the register of the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate since 2007, nearly 30 thousand products have been submitted as dietary supplements.
Although Poland is one of the most restrictive countries in the EU in the control of supplements, in case of growing level of supply and consumption, system and tools of this control are not sufficient. The Supreme Chamber of Control sees the need for legislative action aimed at the introduction of new legal solutions of statutory rank concerning dietary supplements.
Laboratory tests commissioned by the NIK showed that many supplements do not possess the qualities declared by the manufacturers, and what more some of them are even harmful to health. The checks revealed the presence of supplements containing i.a pathogenic bacteria, banned substances from the list of psychoactive drugs or stimulants structurally similar to amphetamine, which is acting as a drug.
A list of supplements that during the inspection of NIK has been questioned by the Chief Sanitary Inspector has been published by NIK.
