India - A new standard on food import
In March, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) published a new Standard in the Official Journal for the management of food import activities with the aim of increasing quality. The main purpose of the legislation is to improve the safety of imported foods that will then be placed on the market.
The rather comprehensive Standard contains provisions governing Customs clearance of food imported in India, but also provisions on the licensing of food importers, storage, inspection and sampling of imported food, analysis of samples, prohibition and restriction of specific food imports and labeling provisions to facilitate trade.
