To support industry compliance with the long awaited final rules for revision of the Nutrition Facts Panel final rule and updated serving sizes, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued two guidance documents in January.

The first guidance document is intended to support industry compliance with the Nutrition Facts labeling requirements.  The draft guidance provides information responding to questions about various issues, including the listing of added sugars, and the declaration of quantitative amounts of vitamins and minerals.

The second draft guidance concerns the new Reference Amounts Customarily Consumed (RACCs) that were revised last year.   This guidance provides information about the classification of food products into specific product categories in relation to tables of RACCs established by FDA’s 2016 regulation for serving sizes.

The majority of manufacturers must comply with the final rules by July 26, 2018.  All food products introduced into interstate commerce on or after this date must be in compliance with the new labeling rules. A one year extension to July 26, 2019 was granted to manufacturers with less than $10 million in annual food sales.
