Italy - The organic market is increasing
Recently, the Ministry of Agricultural, Food, Forestry and Tourism Policies of Italy (Mipaaft) released data on organic farming in Italy for the year 2018, confirming its production and consumption growth.
Since 2010 the hectares of biological surface cultivated in Italy have increased by over 75%, with 2 million hectares of biological surfaces (+ 3% compared to 2017) and 79,000 subjects involved in the sector (+4%). The surface used for organic farming now accounts for 15.5% of the total, well above the EU average of 7%.
Finally, consumption has increased by 102% in the last 5 years, with data increasing every year. At the end of 2019, the value of organic products on the market is supposed to be close to 3 billion euros.
The only downward figure is that relating to imports of organic products, which fell to 10%.
