Korea - An international symposium on the insect industry
The Korean Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs held the International Insect Industry Symposium on October 27, 2017. Now the world is paying attention to the role of insects in substitute food of future humanity, the treatment of diseases and the preservation of ecosystems, and the symposium was a venue for sharing the status of insect industry in each country through the establishment of global cooperation network and meeting with edible insect venture companies.
On the other hand, insect breeding farms in Korea are growing at 383 in 2012, 724 in 2015 and 1,261 in 2016.
The number of workers in the insect industry is estimated at 1,821 as of 2016. The insect farmhouse is a total of 818 farmhouses and is growing cetonia pilifera, dynastid beetles, stag beetles, meal beetles, crickets, butterflies, bees, super mealworm and grasshoppers. Insects are sold at large marts (292 marts) and independent stores (53 sotres). The domestic market is expected to grow from $ 269 million in 2015 to $ 475 million in 2020.
