Six GI food products included in the list
The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries announced the registration of six food products
in the “Japan Geographical Indication (GI)” protection system: “Owanionsen Moyashi” (bean
sprouts), “Sanbe Soba” (buckwheat), “Hiyama Haishen” (sea cucumber), “Otake Ichijiku” (fig),
“Yatsushirotokusan Banpeiyu” (citrus), “Yatsushiro Shouga” (ginger).
The Geographical Indication (GI) system was set up to protect food or products of agriculture,
forestry and fishing that come from a specific Japanese region and whose production follows a
traditional method.
